How Do Anti-Lock Braking Systems Work?

Q: What is ABS? 
 
A: Antilock braking systems (ABS), first introduced on the 1971 Chrysler Imperial, use speed sensors at each wheel that send information on the wheels’ rotational speeds back to a processor. Let’s start with a sidewall stamp of P255/55 R 15 97T. What does that all mean?
 
P -- denotes a passenger tire. On other tires, LT stands for Light Truck, T for Temporary Spare and ST for Special Trailer.
