With spring here, now is the time to begin looking after your tires. Spring temperatures at times can be comparable to summer. This means a greater risk of tire blowout. Here is some advice regarding spring tire inspection and how to keep wear to a minimum.
Checking the tire pressure is essential regardless of the tire brand. Winter has just passed, and the cold weather may have left the tire under-inflated. It’s important to correct this now that the weather is warming up. Tires with inadequate air will wear more quickly because the higher temperatures lead to increased air pressure inside the tires. Be sure the tire pressure is within the recommended psi. It’s equally important not to over-inflate.
The tires’ treads should wear evenly across the surface. However, it’s possible that the tires may wear more rapidly along the sides than at the center. This is a sign of the tires being out of balance or a problem with the suspension. Tire balancing and alignment are issues that can be addressed during a professional pre-trip inspection.
It’s not enough to just perform a visual check of the treads. You need to actually measure to determine the amount of remaining tread. A simple DIY inspection is the penny test. Take a penny and insert it upside down in the grooves of the tires. If the top of Lincoln’s head is still visible after you stuck the penny down all the way, then the treads are worn and must be replaced.
These tire care tips are important year-round but especially in spring as the weather heats up. Contact Sea Tac Tire & Auto Tech to schedule a service appointment, which includes a spring tire inspection.
