It’s fairly easy to determine certain problems with your vehicle, such as a flat tire or non-responsive brakes. However, other problems are not as obvious. The exhaust system is one example. This part plays a critical function, but issues aren’t always noticeable if you’re unaware what to look out for. Here are the red flags that indicate a faulty exhaust system.
When you accelerate, you may notice it takes longer than normal for the vehicle to get up to the desired speed. This is especially the case when you’re stopped at a light in an intersection. You may also notice trouble when you need to pick up speed to change lanes and pass another vehicle. You may even have to apply far more pressure to the gas pedal than typical.
If you get on your knees and examine the undercarriage, you may notice visual signs of wear. The exhaust pipes may appear badly rusted or even sagging and dangerously close to the floor. This warrants a professional inspection right away. Corrosion can rust through the exhaust surface and create holes. This can seriously impede the component’s ability to filter out harmful exhaust smoke.
The O2 sensor icon may light up on the dashboard. This is your car telling you there’s a problem detected with the exhaust system. If the light is yellow, it means it requires attention soon. A red light means the issue is urgent and needs your attention NOW.
