Every now and then, you may notice a tire with nail when cleaning or inspecting your car. No doubt, this is an undesirable situation for any Bonney Lake vehicle owner. What should you do? Is it ok to pull out the nail? Is the tire salvageable?
Do NOT remove the nail. If the nail is long enough, it may have penetrated the tire’s inner lining. If you remove the nail, a hole will be exposed, causing air to rapidly leak out. It’s also possible the nail is quite short and haven’t punctured the lining. However, it’s difficult to know for sure, hence why you should leave the nail in place.
Check the tire pressure. Is the psi significantly lower than the other tires? If so, it’s leaking air even with the nail in place. Either have the car towed to an auto service center or replace the tire with a spare.
The tire may be repaired or replaced depending on the severity of the puncture. A technician will remove the nail and examine the depth of the puncture. A deep gash may expose the tire’s inner steel belts. This leaves them vulnerable to corrosion. In this scenario, the tire has to be replaced. On the other hand, if the puncture isn’t that deep, the technician may be able to repair the tire using an inexpensive plug and patch.
We’ll assess your tire and determine the appropriate course of action. Sea Tac Tire and Auto Tech has a tire center that can perform industry-approved tire repairs. We can also install a new tire suitable for your vehicle make and model. In any case, leave a tire with nail alone. Let a professional handle it.
