The catalytic converter is an essential component that offsets toxic fumes and other harmful particulates in the engine combustion process. This is why it’s necessary to recognize when this piece may be on the verge of failure. Here are the symptoms that indicate your vehicle may be due for a catalytic converter replacement.
You may notice the engine revs more than usual in relation to the pressure applied to the gas pedal. This is likely due to the catalytic converter not efficiently converting chemicals and gasses into safer elements. When the converter fails to perform this conversion, the engine is forced to work harder to get the vehicle up to speed.
A failing catalytic converter also puts the engine at risk of overheating. Essentially, the engine is still creating heat, but less of it is exiting through the exhaust system. The heat that remains trapped increases pressure in the manifold and cylinders, thereby causing engine temperatures to rise.
A degraded catalytic converter can lead to a no-go on the state-mandatory emissions test. If you fail, the inspector should be able to outline the probable causes. Often, a failing converter is the root cause.
You may also notice a rattling sound. This may stem from internal damage in the catalytic converter. Inside, the component has a mesh structure that may have come apart and collapsed, causing it to rattle. The rattling noise may manifest as you accelerate or start the engine.
