Even with modern technology, some auto parts need to be replaced more often than others. Some parts may not need to be replaced at all over the life of the car, while others need to be repaired or replaced three, four or more times. We identify the most common auto repairs and the symptoms when the parts begin failing.
As a general rule, brakes need to be replaced every 50,000 miles. However, this figure can vary widely depending on your driving habits and where you live. Constantly slamming on the brakes is one way to accelerate wear. If you notice it’s taking longer than usual to come to a full stop when braking, get the brakes looked at.
Tires are often replaced and seldom repaired. However, if there’s a minor damage, such as a tiny puncture, an auto technician may be able to apply a tire patch. In any case, if you notice one tire losing air more rapidly than the others, there may be an air leak somewhere on the tire or around the valve.
Like tires, batteries are far more often replaced. The closest thing you can do to repairing a battery is recharging it. Once a battery dies, a technician will examine it and advise whether a new battery is best. Batteries are one of the most commonly replaced car parts, requiring a replacement every four to five years.
The spark plug provides the electric charge to burn fuel and send the engine roaring to life. When the spark plug begins to wear, you may notice significantly slower acceleration and constant idling and engine misfires.
