Winter tires are sturdy, but like all-season tires, they eventually wear out. This is especially the case if you use them year-round, which is a definite no-no. How long do winter tires last and how can you extend their life?
Unfortunately, we can’t give you a straight answer in years or mileage. Typically, assuming you only use the tires in winter like you’re supposed to, expect them to last about four seasons. Of course, they can last longer or shorter depending on how often you drive and the road conditions. Icy surfaces generally cause more wear than snowy surfaces.
Regular auto servicing like rotations, balance and alignment will also extend their life by an additional season or two.
How you store the tires after winter also contributes to their longevity. The fact is tires continue to age and wear even when not in use. When storing them away, be sure they’re completely dry and store them in an airtight black trash bag. Remove as much air as you can before sealing or tying the bag. Keep the tires at room temperature and away from heat-generating appliances like the furnace or water boiler.
Winter tires have a deeper tread for improved gripping ability and wicking away water. This makes tread wear a bigger problem compared to all-season tires. Winter tires need to have a tread depth of at least four millimeters. New tires in mint condition will have a tread depth of eight to nine millimeters.
With winter arrival comes harsher road conditions that warrant tires specifically designed for ice and snow. Bring your car to Sea Tac Tire and Auto Tech for winter tire installation. Schedule an appointment to get started before the winter frost fully sets in. Contact us today to get started.
