It’s wise to switch to winter tires now that fall is coming to an end. However, should you take the extra step of adding studs? What exactly are studded winter tires and how are they different than those without studs?
As suggested in their name, studded winter tires have metal studs implanted throughout the tread surface. This enhances the tire’s ability to grip the road when driving over icy and slushy surfaces. The studs essentially act as miniature anchors that dig into the ice and prevent the tire from slipping. They also increase responsiveness when braking and accelerating.
If you already have winter tires, you may not have to replace them if you want studs. Some tire types come with pre-set locations on the tread designed for inserting studs.
Studded tires aren’t beneficial in every instance. They’re only advantageous when there’s been heavy snow. We only recommend them if you have plans for winter off-roading. The streets of Puyallup during winter don’t get cold enough to necessitate studded tires. When roads aren’t iced and just wet, studs actually decrease the tires’ grip.
In most instances, winter tires without studs will suffice for driving conditions in the Puyallup area. In fact, due to improvements in tire technology, modern winter tires minus studs are just as capable as their studded counterparts. In any case, speak with one of our tire pros to discuss your commuting plans. We’ll determine whether your situation warrants studs.
We recommend motorists make the switch to winter tires, studded or non-studded. Schedule an appointment with Sea Tac Tire and Auto Tech for tire replacement or other auto services. Studded winter tires are one option we install for all makes and models.
