A Guide to Winter Tires in Puyallup
posted on

Chances are the tires on your car are all-season tires. This means they’re designed for use across varying temperature ranges. With fall here and winter not far off, it may be time to consider a shift to winter tires.
Why Switch to Winter Tires?
Under wet road conditions, all-season tires have the gripping ability equivalent to winter tires with half-worn treads. This is assuming the all-season tires are in good condition.
Winter tires are made from softer rubber compounds for enhanced gripping. The treads are also made for wicking away water and ice. With this in mind, winter tires must be replaced by spring and definitely by summer. The softer rubber makes it prone to accelerated wear during motion over the hot road.
Winter Tire Treads
Winter tires have deeper treads. This allows more snow to pack into the grooves, which actually improves the grip. In addition, winter tires also have more sipes. Sipes are tiny slits in the tire, which you can see if you examine the tire up close. Sipes improve gripping during breaking and accelerating.
Do You Still Have Summer Tires?
Did you happen to switch over to summer tires at the onset of summer? Switch the tires ASAP! Under colder temperatures, the rubber in summer tires starts to harden. This greatly reduces traction and gripping. Summer tires begin losing their grip once the temperature reaches below 50 degrees. Under this weather condition, summer tires are unsafe even when the road is dry.
