Simple Car Care Tips to Follow This Winter Season - Part 2

posted on

In our last post, we explained some quick and simple car care tips any driver should complete before the cold days of winter set in. Here we finish the rest of the list in order to ensure you stay safe out on those icy roads!

5. Don't forget about your brakes

Your brakes go through a lot of wear and tear during the winter. Typically, brakes can last from 25,000 to 50,000 miles, so if you need to replace them do so as soon as possible. It is also important to remember to properly use your brakes in the ice and snow to prevent excessive wear and tear. For example, pump your brakes when stopping on icy roads so you do not slide and never slam on your brakes no matter the conditions.

6. Top up your fluids

You should try to keep all the fluids in your car as full as possible during the winter. This includes your coolant, antifreeze, gasoline, and washer fluid. Coolant is especially important as it prevents the engine from freezing and expanding, and the washer fluid will help driver visibility on messy roads. Plus, keeping your gas tank full may prevent accumulated water from freezing inside your fuel pump.

7. Replace wiper blades

You have to replace wiper blades more often than you would think. In general, your wiper blades start to lose their effectiveness in as little as six months. As a rule of thumb, replace your blades at the beginning of the cold season and in the beginning of the spring.

8. Get an oil change

The idea is simple: clean oil helps your car run better, no matter the weather. Motor oil also thickens up in the cold, making it harder for the engine to run efficiently. Head to your favorite friendly auto mechanic for an oil change whenever you notice your mileage decrease or your car struggle to accelerate.

In the winter time, the need for auto repairs on your vehicle may be more pronounced as it is working harder to get you where you need to go. Service your vehicle with our friendly auto mechanics at Sea Tac Tire & Auto Tech, a Puyallup auto repair center, to ensure that you and your vehicle stay safe this cold season.
