Basic Car Maintenance: 101

posted on

The ins and outs of car maintenance can get pretty confusing, so here's a quick guide to everything you need to know about basic car maintenance!

Headlights

To make sure you can see properly during a rain storm, through a snowstorm, in fog, or during the night, it's crucial to invest in quality headlights. Here are some tips that to help you service your vehicle's headlights.

Check your lenses. If they are foggy or yellow, clean them right away! Unclear lenses will hinder your visibility when the headlights are in use.

Check your lights for focus. They should both be hitting the same place, and if they are aimed too high or low, they can impact the visibility of other drivers.

Check for brightness. If you are noticing that your lights are becoming yellow, don't hesitate to take them to your friendly auto mechanic right away to get fixed.

Brakes

A good set of brakes can last between 25,000 to 50,000 miles. To ensure they last as long as they should and you do not need any auto repair services, do the following:

Check your brake fluid to make sure you have an adequate amount.

If your brake fluid is milky or white in color, water has contaminated it. Change it right away.

Regularly inspect your brake pads and rotors. You should be able to see them when removing the tire nearest to it. Experts recommend checking every time you have your tires rotated.

Tires

Without quality tires, you will compromise your and your passengers' safety. Here are some rules to follow when it comes to tire maintenance.

A tire rotation should be done every 7,500 miles.

You should check your tire alignment every 6,000 miles, or whenever you get an oil change.

Use the penny test to check for tire wear. If you take a penny and put Lincoln's head upside down in the treads, and you can still see his head, you need new tires.

When broken down simply, car maintenance does not have to be confusing! Just follow these tips and you will not have to invest in any auto repair services for a while!
