brake repair in Puyallup, WABrake service is a big part of the comprehensive auto repair that we offer at Sea Tac Tire & Auto Tech, and from time to time we get questions about ABS systems and their role in braking:

Q: What is ABS?

A: Antilock braking systems (ABS), first introduced on the 1971 Chrysler Imperial, use speed sensors at each wheel that send information on the wheels’ rotational speeds back to a processor. If one wheel starts to slow down as if it may skid, the processor meters brake pressure accordingly through a system of pumps and valves to prevent any wheels from locking up.

Q: Does ABS need maintenance?

A: Modern ABS systems are fairly trouble free, but it’s possible that the sensors or other components can need service from time to time. An illuminated dashboard ABS lamp often means that a trouble code is stored in the ABS processor or the engine control computer.

Q: Engine control computer? I thought this was about brakes?

A: Today’s cars actually use several computer networks, many of which are tied in to the engine control computer. ABS in newer cars is also designed to work with traction control systems or electronic stability control. In these setups, if a skid is detected:
  • Braking force is metered to different wheels through ABS
  • Spark is reduced to one or more cylinders
  • Fuel supply is restricted in one or more cylinders
  • The throttle is closed, reducing the amount of power to the wheels

Q: At times, I’ve felt a buzzing sensation through the brake pedal. Is this normal?

A: Actually, yes. On many cars (especially ones with older ABS systems), that buzzing feedback through the brake pedal means that the ABS pump is engaging.

Q: I always thought you were supposed to pump the brakes to avoid a skid?

A: Actually, pumping the brakes can reduce the effectiveness of your car’s ABS system and is not advisable (although we know that old habits are hard to break).
