auto repair in Puyallup, WALet’s talk for a moment about the timing belt because it’s one of the most important items you can address in auto repair. In Puyallup, WA at Sea Tac Tire & Auto Tech, we’ve seen the result of broken timing belts, and it wasn’t pretty -- but we’ll get to that in a minute.

Timing Belt vs. Serpentine Belt

The two aren’t interchangeable with each other. The serpentine belt is an external belt that drives the alternator, AC compressor, water pump and other secondary accessories; these used to be driven by separate belts on older vehicles. Staying current with auto repair and vehicle maintenance such as these will not only extend vehicle life, but improve performance.

The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, which in turn opens and shuts the valves as part of the combustion cycle. Many vehicles feature a timing chain, which requires no maintenance. A belt, on the other hand, is rubber and will stretch and deflect over time. If the timing belt breaks, the valves stop working while the pistons continue to travel up and down in the cylinders. The pistons then crash into open or partly-open valves, thoroughly wrecking the engine.

Not all engines are designed this way, many engines are a “non-interference” design, engineered especially to prevent this from happening. Even in a vehicle with a non-interference engine, though, a broken timing belt means that you’re stuck by the side of the road, since the valves will no longer be powered at all and combustion can’t occur.

When Should My Timing Belt be Replaced?

This might vary from one manufacturer to another. Some manufacturers call for a timing belt change at 50,000 miles, while others prescribe a change at 90-100,000 miles. Regardless of manufacturer recommendations, this is a procedure you absolutely do not want to put off as a broken timing belt can be catastrophic.
